The following is something new we are going to try out here at The Pit: Sports Talk. As you may have heard, or seen, Carmen Hayes joined The Pit on 02/17/2012 to talk Health and Fitness. Obviously, he is far from an expert on the subject. But the purpose is to help him build up some credibility, as minor as it may be, and to be more involved with The Pit and WXOU. Like myself, Carmen dedicated a great deal of time to Health and Fitness. Neither of us are experts, but then again, could you TRULY call me, Pontzer, Puckett or Topher sports experts (yet)?
So, let’s give the guy a chance and see what he can do! Below is his first little tidbit of advice, and it is something I know personally works well; I have done much of the same advice Carmen gives in this column. I had him write this on the spot, so future posts may be more organized and better researched, but as of now this works. Hope you enjoy and spread the word!–Damien Dennis
5 Easy ways to get back into shape.
By Carmen Hayes.
America is no doubt the number one ranked country when it comes to obesity. America lives on fast food and very unhealthy processed foods which is why it makes us a great country but one thing people don’t have is self-control when it comes to eating out. I know this for a fact since I work at Burger King. I see a lot of the same people come in every day ordering the same stuff all the time, I can even see them and be able to ring their order up before they even get to me. This is just one of the problems why most people are out of shape and are unhealthy. I use to be just like them until I decided to make a change what I do and what I eat every day.
Two years ago I weighed 250 pounds, I would go to work, eat disgusting foods yet they tasted so good and drink about 4 cans of Coca Cola every day, then I would come home and just lay in bed til I fall asleep. One day I started getting chest pains and feel like when I laid down my weight was on my neck suffocating me, and it was just horrible until one day I decided to make some little changes that anyone can and here is how.
1. Make little changes in what you eat.
Most people can do this and it is not hard at all. Switching out high calorie foods and snacks to an apple or little snack packs can save you between 100-400 calories a day which will add up. 3500 calories equal 1 pound. if you can cut 300 calories a day you can see a big improvement. Changing out a candy bar for a fruit like an Apple or an orange a day will also do wonders and it will save you about 200 calories, just little changes will go a long way.
2. Drink water.
This is very simple; the more water you drink, the more your body detoxifies itself and the more water you drink, the more weight you will lose. How does this work? I hear that a lot from so many people and yet it’s simple. Drinking a gallon of water a day will help lose built up water around your waist to help you look like you slim down. Water has 0 calories and has no harmful ingredients in it. Your body is made up of 70% of water; why not give it what your body needs?
3. Go for a walk.
Walking is a great exercise to burn off calories and get you off your backside from the couch. Walking is has its benefits as well. If you are feeling hungry walking for 20 minutes will help curve your appetite. Getting some fresh air will also help you instead of just sitting inside your house all day.
4. Get some sleep.
Since you are sleeping you can’t eat. It’s the perfect way to not eat for 8 hours, since your metabolism is always at work it isn’t working hard when you’re sleeping, but it still is working. Don’t eat two hours before bedtime and you will wake up feeling better about your body, granted you may be hungry it’s a good sign. The average American gets only 6 1/2 hours of sleep a night when the recommended hour of sleep is 8-9 hours. Do yourself a favor and get some sleep.
5. Get out and do some exercise.
Similar to number 3 which is walking, doing more exercises like joining a gym or even doing some gym-less workouts will help you more then you know. Joining a gym is a no brainer but monthly gym memberships can be a hassle for people who can’t afford it. So why not do some gym-less workouts like pushups, body weight squats, jumping jacks; and there are just so many other things you can do. Not only will it help burn calories and body fat but it will help build muscle and tone your body up.
These are just simple ways to help someone to become healthy. Before starting any exercises or diets its always recommended to check with your doctor first. If anyone has any questions or comments, you can contact Carmen Hayes at firstname.lastname@example.org
